Drive test – Audi A4 2008

Last week I had the pleasure to test the car of a friend (Emi, many thanks!), a beautiful A4 2.0 TDI, 2008 edition, driven for 31,200 km. I drove the car for a couple of hours but I tested a lot of its functionalities and I enjoyed it.

First, a series of first impressions, and then my account on how it drives.

AUDI A4 2.0 TDI , 2008 edition

Mileage: 31.200km

Technical problems since buying: none

Design: compared to the previous version, the new A4 is longer, wider, and more elegant. The front grille offers it a fresh sedan air, so necessary for the premium segment it addresses to. The 2l common rail engine generates 140CP and 320Nm torque @4000rpm.

I was surprised to see that the two exhaust pipes were absolutely clean – no dust, no ashes – the new 2.0 TDI engine is a clean, ecologic one.The engine sound is more refined, compared to the old A4 sound, specific for old VW engines with their particular ‘tractor-like’ rattling, and the refinement comes from the fact that brand new common rail technology is put in place.

The interior is much more changed…for the good. The dashboard has been restyled, and has borrowed a lot from its bigger brother, the A6. What I noticed is that now the A/C can be turned on/off for each of the passengers sitting in the front. The audio system is excellent, and powerful enough to offer an enjoyable sound in the cabin. And the soundproofing of the car is great.

The gearbox on the tested car was multitronic, which means it utilizes the newest technology for gearboxes, simply called CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission). The role of this transmission is to guarantee maximum power to the wheels, constantly, and with maximum efficiency. As a visible result for the driver, the revmeter will remain at 1800 rpm when accelerating from 20 to 120kmh, even if the gears shift. The ‘negative’ side of this functionality is that the driver can’t feel much of hitting the gas pedal, you’re not pushed back in the seat anymore, and that acceleration feeling, so appreciated by any driver who enjoys riding the car in a sportive manner is somehow lost. The car accelerates and accelerates, but you don’t feel a thing, you’re just carried by the car, and the feeling is that of an electric engine, where there’s just silence, no roaring, no nothing. I personally wouldn’t like that for my car.

However, the gearbox also has a Sport mode, which one activated allows the tachometer indicator to reach into the red zone, offering the driver the sensation of a manual gearbox.

What really impressed me is the way gears are shifted, so smooth that you can’t feel it happen, you just watch the speed meter moving and moving to the right and you find yourself running at speeds you couldn’t have thought possible in a city like Bucharest. I can only say – respect for the engineers at Audi, and to the people who think, analyze and design such great technologies.

Moving to the cabin, I really liked the quality of the inside materials, how the seats are positioned, and how they can be adjusted. However, even if the A4 is bigger and higher than its predecessor, on the back seats a 1.8 tall person still can’t fit well. The luggage carrier is big enough with its 460 liters.

The car is a pleasure to drive, it’s stable and reliable. The average mileage on Bucharest-Targoviste (82 km, national road, with villages every 5 km) was 6,7l/100km. When shifting to sport drive, and keeping the gas pedal pushed to the maximum for a few km, the computer indicated 12l/100km. I believe these are extraordinarily good results, taking into account how I accelerated the car during the test.

What can I say overall….a balanced car, with its own personality, a car in the premium segment, worth the money. I was very positively impressed with the car’s performance both in Bucharest’s jammed traffic and on the national roads.

The price for such a car (with the exact endowments and options) is 32,000 EUR TTC. The owner benefited from a special offer from the dealer at that time, so he got a 5,000 EUR discount, which is good, taking into account the current economic situation.

Therefore, I suggest you should visit your Audi dealer in Romania to check out the offers.
